Greetings!
December brings the New York Notre Dame community a plethora of events. Most notably, our gamewatches continue at Public House, renowned Prof. George Lopez will be coming on Dec 4th to give a speech on building peace in today’s contentious global environment, and on Dec 6th we will be having our annual Christmas party at O’Hanlon’s (349 E 14th Street). This year’s Christmas party will be family friendly and affordable for all (i.e. free). We will also be having it in tandem with our quarterly networking event and the Ohio State vs. ND Basketball gamewatch, all at O’Hanlon’s. As always, please email me any time with any questions.

2) Dec 4th we will be having a very special guest, the world renowned Peace Studies professor, Professor George Lopez from Notre Dame, coming to New York to share his thoughts on building peace in today’s contentious global environment. He will be doing so via our Hesburgh Lecture forum. The event will be open to all, with a special reception in advance for NDNY Club members who can attend. The event capacity is limited to 100. See the additional details below for how to RSVP and donate to the Club for the event.
3) December 6th from 4pm-6pm we will have our annual Christmas party, networking event, and basketball gamewatch all in one! We will hold a casual event with cookie decorating for the kids and drink specials for all. So come meet and celebrate the holiday season with alums and families of all ages at the popular O'Hanlon's Bar - 349 E14th Street. See additional details below.

Here are the new and improved specials with
something for everyone!
Purchase of a package is not required for entry. Attendees may also purchase food and beverages at the regular Public House prices. The packages outlined below will be offered starting 30 minutes prior to kick-off and will end when the game is over.
• Non-Drinkers: $10 Cover which includes Soda, Juice and Water throughout the duration of the game. $3 of the payment will be donated by Public House to the Notre Dame Club of New York. Each person will receive a wristband which will also entitle them to the $6 Public House Wings Special.
• Unlimited Domestic Beer Open Bar/Bottomless Plates of Wings: $30 for the duration of the game. $5 of the payment will be donated by Public House to the Notre Dame Club of New York. This includes Bud Light/Budweiser Draught & Bottled Beer.
• Bucket-O-Beer Special: $30 Bucket-o-Beer including 5 Bottles of Beer (including Miller Light). $5 of the payment will be donated by Public House to the Notre Dame Club of New York. People with this wristband are also entitled to the $6 Public House Wings Special.
• Premium Liquor Open Bar/Bottomless Plates of Wings: $40 for the duration of the game. This includes: Imported/Domestic Draught & Bottled Beer, House Wine & Premium Mixed Liquor Drinks ONLY: Ketel One, Absolut, Stoli, Jim Beam, Jack Daniels, Captain Morgan. NO Shots, NO Top Shelf, NO Rocks or Martinis, NO Red Bull. $5 of the payment will be donated by Public House to the Notre Dame Club of New York.
The specials above do not include tax or gratuity for servers/bartenders. This will be conveniently billed to you at your seat if you are in the dining area. If you are at the bar, please tip and pay tax as appropriate directly to the bartender as you are served.

If you are an NDNY Club member there will be a special member’s reception beginning at 6pm on a different floor. The event itself will begin at 7pm and run until 9pm. Wine and Cheese will be served.

The 20th Annual Leal-Hinojosa Scholarship Fundraising Celebration. From 7pm to 10pm, join us at the Nation Arts Club (15 Gramercy Park South) for cocktails and hors d'oeuvres.
The objective of the Fund is to provide annual scholarships, to a college of their choice, for qualified graduating seniors from San Benito High School in Texas and Washington Irving High School in NYC. To date, they have been able to bestow 79 scholarships - totaling 92,350! A tax-deductible contribution of $40 is requested of each guest.

Additionally, we will be having this gathering in tandem with a much needed networking event for anyone who is job seeking or looking to fill open positions with qualified ND candidates. All events are free. A cash bar with beer and drink specials will of course be available.

Join fellow alumni at mass every 1st Sunday of the month. This is a great opportunity to meet new people and bond with the ones you already know. Join us at the Mercy Center on Saturday, December 13th for the Saturday Reading Enrichment Program to help provide tutoring and fun activities to children who score in the lower percentiles in reading. Volunteers with teaching or education experience would be great, but certainly are not necessary. The Mercy Center is located at 377 East 145th Street. It is accessible by the 2, 5, and 6 trains to the 149th Street / 3rd Avenue stop. The day begins at 9:30am with a brief orientation and ends around 1pm. Email Amy at amycrownover@hotmail.com to sign up.

Join us for our normal 2nd Sunday mass and some mingling afterward at St. Francis Church, 135 W. 31st Street (between 6th and 7th). There will be mass gatherings at St. Francis every 2nd Sunday of the month starting in December. Join fellow alumni for mass and some fun afterward.
At mass, a pew will be reserved for all alumni to sit together. After mass, all can enjoy some cocktails and conversation in a space attached to the church. There will be a $5 hospitality charge, a small price to pay to mingle with fellow ND alumni and get into the Christmas spirit. We hope to see you there!

Catholicism, Race, and the Civil Rights Movement
The Museum of the City of New York has invited John T. McGreevy, I.A. O’Shaughnessy Dean of the College of Arts and Letters and Professor of History at the University of Notre Dame, to discuss the Catholic Church in the Civil Rights era and beyond, spotlighting the pivotal role played by Catholic neighborhood residents and activists in the Civil Rights movement. Professor McGreevy is the author of two landmark books: Catholicism and American Freedom: A History (W.W Norton, 2003) and Parish Boundaries: The Catholic Encounter with Race in the Twentieth Century Urban North (University of Chicago Press, 1996).
