The ultimate stakes, however, are much higher . . . The Ara Parseghian Medical Research Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to funding medical research projects to find a treatment for Niemann-Pick Type C (NP-C) disease – a genetic, cholesterol storage disorder that primarily strikes children, with death occurring before or during adolescence. Named in honor of Ara Parseghian, the much beloved Notre Dame Football Coach, whose three youngest grandchildren were diagnosed with NP-C in 1994, the foundation has sponsored research in 25 labs around the world—research that may have implications not only for those with NP-C, but for those with other cholesterol metabolism disorders, as well as Alzheimer’s. The three Parseghian children have since lost their battle to NP-C, but their promise lives on through the work of the foundation the generosity of donors like yourselves.
